Duke Doctor of Physical Therapy Students Engage with Local High Schoolers at HPREP Health Professions Fair

This past Saturday, Duke’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students had the chance to inspire and engage with the next generation of healthcare professionals at the Duke Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) Health Professions Fair. The event was part of HPREP's ongoing initiative to introduce high school students to various careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and health professions and encourage them to pursue these fields.

HPREP is an enriching program that motivates and supports high school students interested in health professions. It spans from January to May annually, featuring eight in-person sessions at the Duke University School of Medicine. HPREP aims to help students explore various career paths in healthcare and understand the rigorous but rewarding nature of pursuing a career in the health sciences. The event on Saturday was one of these in-person sessions, specifically the Health Professions Fair, which serves as a unique opportunity for students to learn directly from professionals in the field.

The event welcomed approximately 60 high school students from various schools across the Triangle area of North Carolina. With curiosity and excitement, students visited a series of booths representing different healthcare careers. The goal was to show them the diverse career opportunities available and to inspire them to pursue their aspirations in health professions.

The Duke DPT students were stationed at a booth where they engaged the students by providing an overview of the physical therapy profession. They discussed the educational path to becoming a physical therapist, the various responsibilities associated with the role, and the impact physical therapists have on patient care and recovery.

In true educational fashion, the DPT students brought the profession to life through interactive demonstrations. Students had the chance to engage in hands-on activities showcasing essential physical therapy elements. One activity focused on balance, while another highlighted strength—two core areas that physical therapists work with daily inpatient rehabilitation. Students participated directly in the activities, experiencing firsthand physical therapists' work to improve their patients’ mobility and strength.

Throughout the fair, students used BINGO cards to track their participation. When they visited each station, they had their cards signed off, encouraging them to explore all the career stations. The DPT students were enthusiastic in their discussions, answering questions and offering valuable insight into the profession.

A Fulfilling Experience for All

The event was an incredible opportunity for the Duke DPT students to give back to the community by sharing their passion for physical therapy with the younger generation. It also provided a platform for high school students to envision themselves in a healthcare career and realize the immense potential for success in STEM fields.

"Being able to share what we do with these students and inspire them to consider physical therapy as a career was a gratifying experience," said one of the Duke DPT students who participated in the event. "Seeing their enthusiasm and curiosity was incredibly fulfilling. It’s exciting to think that some of them could be the next generation of healthcare professionals."

The Health Professions Fair was a tremendous success. It helped to foster the students' interest in health careers and provided them with the tools and inspiration to pursue their dreams.

Looking Forward

As HPREP continues to engage with students over the next several months, Duke DPT students are eager to participate in future events, offering their expertise and support. By connecting with high school students, they hope to inspire and motivate them to pursue careers in physical therapy and beyond, ensuring that the future of healthcare remains bright, diverse, and full of opportunity.
