Creativity and Connection Shine at Encouragement Day Celebration
In celebration of National Encouragement Day, students from Duke’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) and Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) programs came together for an afternoon of creativity, connection, and camaraderie. The event was co-hosted by Duke LeWell and the Duke DPT program, offering a refreshing opportunity for students to pause, reflect, and support one another.
Participants enjoyed a variety of wellness-focused activities, including coloring, rock painting, pizza, and conversation, all designed to foster joy and build community across disciplines. The relaxed setting encouraged students to engage in meaningful dialogue and embrace the spirit of encouragement.
A highlight of the event was a talk by Dr. Michael Iwama, PhD, MSc, BScOT, professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Duke OTD program, who introduced the Kawa Model. This culturally responsive framework uses the metaphor of a river to represent life’s journey.
“The Kawa Model helps us understand that life flows through a river shaped by our environment, relationships, and challenges,” said Dr. Iwama. “When we recognize and work with these elements, we can better support each other in navigating life’s currents.”
The event was made possible through the support of Duke LeWell, whose mission is to provide centralized services to support School of Medicine students and others involved in the healthcare learning environment. By promoting wellness and interprofessional collaboration, LeWell continues to be a vital resource for nurturing the next generation of healthcare leaders.
“This was such a refreshing way to connect with peers and reflect on why we chose these professions,” said one attendee. “The Kawa Model really helped us think about our own paths and how we support each other.”
The celebration served as a powerful reminder that encouragement, creativity, and community are essential ingredients in both personal growth and professional development.
