The Duke Occupational Therapy Doctorate (OTD) program recently hosted an energetic and inspiring Mentorship Social, led by assistant professor Tomeico Faison, OTD, OTR/L, FAOTA. Now in its fifth year, the event brought together current students, alumni, faculty, and volunteer leaders to foster meaningful connections and emphasize the importance of mentorship within the Duke OTD community.

Held in a warm and relaxed setting, the event featured panel discussions, informal networking, and heartfelt reflections from alumni and mentors. Special thanks go to Lindy Norman, OTD division administrator, for her behind-the-scenes support and logistical coordination—especially for making sure the event had all the essentials.
Michael Iwama, PhD, MSc, BScOT, professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, graciously volunteered to serve as a mentor at one of the tables, sharing his wisdom and warmth throughout the evening. Second-year students Yaa Quaning, Hannah Collier, and Megan Parks served as volunteer leaders, effectively guiding panel discussions and facilitating conversations throughout the event.
Alumni speakers Emily Coronado, Braelyn Beal, and Karol Martinez shared their experiences and insights, offering encouragement and practical advice to current students. Their generosity went beyond the event, as they also volunteered to support the program in future initiatives.
Since its inception, the Duke OTD Mentorship Program has supported 109 students across five cohorts. Each year, approximately half to three-quarters of the cohort request a mentor and actively participate in the program, underscoring its value and relevance to students’ professional development.
“This mentorship social is a testament to the strength and spirit of our Duke OTD community,” said Dr. Faison. “It’s hard to believe we’re already celebrating our fifth cohort. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who contributes to making this event—and our program—a success year after year.”
The Duke OTD Mentorship Social remains a key part of the program’s commitment to professional growth, teamwork, and lifelong learning. Learn more about the mentorship program here.
