Subject:     Billy Newton Jr. to Retire as Vice Dean for Administration, Clinical Department Support

After over 38 years of service to Duke Health, Billy Newton Jr., Vice Dean for Administration, Clinical Department Support, will retire effective June 30, 2025. Billy has been an integral part of our institution, contributing significantly to the implementation of the Duke Health Integrated Practice and its processes, including the interface with the School of Medicine and its clinical departments.

Billy joined the Duke University School of Medicine’s Dean’s Office in 2008 as the Vice Dean for Finance and Resource Planning, where he oversaw budget, financial operations, and human resources. His journey with Duke began much earlier, in 1986, when he served as an analyst in the Duke Hospital Budget Office. Over the years, he has held various pivotal roles, including administrator in the Department of Medicine Chair’s Office and chief administrator in the Department of Pediatrics and the Private Diagnostic Clinic. Before his tenure at Duke, Billy started his career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a grants and contracts administrator.

Billy’s extensive experience and dedication have been invaluable to our community. Although he will retire from his current role next year, we are pleased to note that Billy has offered to continue work on special projects in the months that follow.

By sharing this retirement announcement well in advance, we can more effectively plan for the transition. This provides another opportunity to evaluate new organizational models in the Dean’s Office which will facilitate even closer coordination with the integrated practice.

Please join us in expressing our deepest gratitude to Billy for his unwavering commitment and outstanding service. We wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement and look forward to his continued contributions.
