What inspired you to pursue this degree?
My passion for cardiac sonography has been the driving force behind my decision to pursue a career in healthcare. Through numerous hands-on experiences, I became captivated by the impact and precision of this field. I had the opportunity to shadow sonographers on the floors during my internship at a hospital in Newport Beach, California, and attend an Echo Conference. These experiences solidified my confidence that this was the path I was meant to follow.
Now, eight months into the Duke University School of Medicine Cardiac Sonography Program, I have never been more certain that I am exactly where I need to be. The knowledge and skills I am gaining, along with the opportunities to work alongside experts in the field, continue to fuel my passion and dedication to this profession. Every day, I am excited to learn and grow as a future cardiac sonographer.
Why did you choose Duke?
I’m originally from California, and while I loved it there, I knew I was ready for a change — something that would challenge me and push me out of my comfort zone. I wanted to grow both personally and professionally, and when I came across Duke’s program, it immediately stood out. I already knew how prestigious Duke was, but what really drew me in was the opportunity to be part of an institution that’s on the cutting edge of medical technology and innovation.
Since starting the program, I’ve realized all my assumptions were absolutely correct — if anything, I underestimated how incredible it would be. Every day, I’m blown away by what I get to see and learn. From the advanced equipment we’re trained on, to the knowledge and mentorship of the professionals I get to work alongside, it’s truly inspiring. Duke has exceeded my expectations in every way, and I feel genuinely lucky to be a part of it!
Do you have a favorite memory from your program?
It’s hard to choose just one moment because truthfully, every experience in the Cardiac Ultrasound Program here at Duke has been amazing. One standout memory was the first time scanning with my classmates and Duke staff — it was such a surreal moment that made everything feel real. That hands-on experience brought all the classroom learning to life. I’ve also loved getting to rotate through so many different areas, from the OR to the Cath Lab to pediatric departments. Each setting has offered a unique perspective on the field and has only deepened my appreciation for the incredible work we get to do. Every step has been both inspiring and rewarding, and I feel truly fortunate to be part of such a dynamic program!
How do you hope to make an impact with your career?
I hope to make a meaningful impact in my career by not only providing exceptional care to patients but also by educating future generations of healthcare professionals. Teaching students will allow me to pass on the knowledge and skills that I’ve gained, helping to shape the next wave of compassionate, skilled cardiac sonographers. Additionally, I want to continue making a difference in patient care, focusing on improving outcomes and ensuring that every patient I encounter feels heard, respected, and well cared for. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to a positive shift in the healthcare experience, both through direct patient care and through mentorship and education.
What was the most important thing you learned at Duke?
One of the most important things I’ve learned at Duke is just how powerful our role can be in a patient’s life. As students and future healthcare professionals, we have the ability to turn someone’s difficult day into something a little better — and that’s incredibly special. Many of the patients we see are anxious and overwhelmed by their medical situations, and I’ve realized how meaningful it is to bring them comfort, even in small ways. I’ve been surrounded by incredible examples of compassionate, patient-centered care, and it’s inspired me to always go the extra mile.
I feel so fortunate for every experience I’ve had with my preceptors and patients — each one has helped me grow and reminded me why I chose this path. I’ll never forget a sign I once saw at a hospital I worked at in California. It read: “Thank you for giving your life to save ours.” That message has stuck with me and perfectly reflects my passion and commitment to making a difference in patient care, improving outcomes, and helping transform the overall healthcare experience.
