Alexandra Helms, Pathologists' Assistant, Master of Health Science (MHS)
Hometown, State
Kingsport, Tennessee
What inspired you to pursue this degree?
I have always been passionate about the biological sciences and pursuing a career in health care. After several formative semesters in my undergraduate anatomy course, shadowing a phenomenal PathA, and many years of being inspired by my mom, who has a career in the same field, I knew that this detailed, hands-on and rewarding world was for me.
Why did you choose Duke?
Duke was the first school to begin a Pathologists' Assistant program and has maintained a reputation of providing students with a rigorous, well-rounded, interdisciplinary and collaborative education. The faculty and preceptors are also outstanding — they are incredibly supportive and passionate, which only made me more excited to join this program.
Do you have a favorite memory from your program?
I have too many great memories to count, but the common thread amongst them are my wonderful classmates. There have been so many laughs, long study days, team projects, and hilarious stories. I am grateful to be surrounded by such supportive and genuine people.
How do you hope to make an impact with your career?
I am so thankful for the opportunity to learn from all the educators involved with this program; their teaching styles, compassion, and knowledge are unmatched. As I continue my career, I hope that I can pass on their insight and expertise, and meaningfully contribute to education within the PathA field in a similarly impactful way.
What was the most important thing you learned at Duke?
During my time at Duke, I’ve learned that you will never stop learning, especially in the surprising and constantly changing field of medicine and pathology, and how to adapt, problem solve, and remain resilient.
