See below for several great faculty development opportunities from the AAMC. These external programs complement our internal Duke offerings, and programs from the AAMC have received great reviews from prior participants.
If you are accepted to the Minority Faculty Leadership Development Seminar (MinFac) or the Mid-Career Minority Faculty Seminar (Mid-C) programs, you may want to explore our internal scholarship program. These scholarships provide partial support to faculty attending select external professional development programs.
The AAMC is pleased to announce a series of leadership development workshops and seminars for early and mid-career racial and ethnic minority faculty who want to enhance their skills to advance professionally in academic medicine.
With a focus of enhancing the career growth of a new generation of diverse leaders, the AAMC Minority Faculty Leadership Development Seminar (MinFac) offers three and a half days of skill building, developing real world experiences that will help attendees:
- Identify professional development goals, design a career path, and gain tools to achieve success
- Understand the realities of advancement in academic medicine through the exploration of the requirements for appointment, promotion, and tenure
- Develop key professional competencies in academic and organizational leadership
- Expand their network of colleagues and role models.
Eligibility: Junior faculty (senior clinical and research fellows, instructors, and assistant professors) and post docs (MD, DO/PhD and PhD) who aspire to leadership positions in academic medicine.
The Grant Writers Coaching Group for NIH Awards is designed to support racial and ethnic minority faculty in improving critical writing skills to strengthen grant proposals and increase diversity in medicine. The Coaching Group is intended to serve as a complementary skill building program for faculty who are actively working on an NIH Career Development (K or R) proposal.
Priority consideration for the Grant Writers Coaching Group will be given to current Minority Faculty Leadership Development Seminar registrants or past Minority Faculty Leadership Seminar participants.
This year, both events will be held at the Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile. The Grant Writers Coaching Group is an all-day workshop on June 12, and the Minority Faculty Leadership Development Seminar runs from June 12-15.

The AAMC Mid-Career Minority Faculty Seminar (Mid-C) is a leadership development program designed specifically for mid-career faculty who aspire to leadership positions in academic medicine. This unique blended-learning program takes a culturally responsive approach to address the specific needs of the participants including small group mentoring sessions and a CV review for career development planning. Individuals at the associate professor level are encouraged to sign up for the seminar, which consists of both virtual learning sessions/webinars and an in-person two and a half-day event, Oct. 16-18 at the AAMC Learning Center in Washington, D.C. Registration will open in the summer.
Eligibility: Individuals at the associate professor level who aspire to leadership positions in academic medicine.
