Duke Med School Student Elected Chair of the Student National Medical Association Board of Directors

Kevin L. Anderson, Jr., a fourth year MD/MHSc candidate at Duke University School of Medicine, has been elected national chairman of Student National Medical Association (SNMA) board of directors. Founded in 1964 by medical students from Howard University College of Medicine and Meharry Medical College, the SNMA is the nation’s oldest and largest, independent, student-run organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. Organized with chapters across the nation, the SNMA membership includes over 7,000 medical students, pre-medical students and physicians. SNMA is dedicated to increasing the number of African-American, Latino, and other students of color entering and completing medical school and to assisting in the eradication of racial and ethnic health disparities.

Anderson graduated Magna Cum Laude and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa from Morehouse College in 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. While at Duke, he recently received a NIH funded TL-1 Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) to support his health services and outcomes research in the Department of Surgery. He has served as a Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) representative on the Facilities and Environment (‘14-15) and Medical Center Academic Affairs (‘15-16) standing committees of Duke University’s Board of Trustees. In May 2016, he completed the John A. Feagin Jr., MD, Leadership Program, which provides select members of the medical profession with leadership development opportunities based on core ethical leadership principles.
