Fieldwork Insights: Checking in with OTD Student Sydney Ross

Share

What kind of work are you doing?
At this site, I am engaging in course instruction, via co-instructing two courses, Capstone and APEx. I am also helping to revamp our APEx course to ensure we are meeting the course aim. I am working with Dr. Mikush on a research project focused on completing a mapping review on capstone methods used across disciplines including occupational therapy.

What interests you about (possibly) teaching in OTD?
I have always had a love for academia and learning, and being in OT school helped me realize that meaningful participation in education plays a vital role in enabling occupation. I love the idea that teaching within a field I am passionate about allows me to embed occupational therapy into the classroom environment. I think that sometimes what is taught about occupation and occupational therapy is not always practiced in the educational setting, especially in higher education, which creates barriers to learning.

What have you learned so far that has been a surprise?
Learning the “behind the scenes” process to organize fieldwork for over 100 students.

What have you enjoyed the most?
I have enjoyed getting to teach and be in the classroom again. I have also enjoyed collaborating with our faculty on various projects.

What do you hope to learn more about?
I hope to learn more about how I can help shape the future of OT education, and what it means to incorporate the nuances of occupation within our program.

Tell us about your first fieldwork assignment.
My first fieldwork was within Duke University Hospital, specifically, I rotated through general medicine, vascular surgery, transplant, and trauma units.
