OPSD PRIME Summer Academy targets the medical student career stage, building on the successes of other Duke diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, incorporating evidence-based approaches to enhance interest and opportunity in research careers among students interested in science and medicine.
The Summer Academy consists of an 8-week didactic/networking curriculum and mentored research training in the lab of a participating Duke faculty member. Selected students will work in a faculty member's research lab, gain clinical exposure (if allowed by COVID, age, and any other applicable restrictions) and benefit from the planned curriculum, discussion sessions and collaborations with other student participants.

Paired Undergraduate Mentoring Program (PUMP) in Uronephrology
The Paired Undergraduate Mentoring Program (PUMP) in Uronephrology aims to recruit diverse cohorts of undergraduate students and expose them to longitudinal research skills-building and mentored research experiences in urology and nephrology. The program builds on the successes of other Duke diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, incorporating evidence-based approaches to enhance interest and opportunity in research careers among students interested in science and medicine.
This program will provide evidence-based professional development activities targeting both the student participants and the junior investigator trainees who will serve as the day-to-day research project mentors. The long-term goal of the program is to remove the barriers that limit the recruitment and retention of a diverse uronephrology workforce, through intensive research experiences, structured triangular mentorship, and sustained virtual engagement.
Program Details:
The program focuses on
- Implementing a mentored summer research enrichment program to develop interest in uronephrology research careers among a diverse cohort of rising junior and senior undergraduates.
- Preparing next-generation uronephrology investigators to mentor a diverse biomedical workforce by training graduate students, postdoctoral associates, and junior Faculty in mentorship and providing them critical experience leading student research projects.
- Preparing a diverse cohort of undergraduates for post-graduate training and entry into uronephrology research careers through sustained engagement that extends and enriches the summer research program experience.
Through funding from the NIH/NIDDK, Duke Office of Physician-Scientist Development is seeking to support undergraduate students (rising Juniors & Seniors) preparing for successful entry into medical and graduate school with intent to pursue a research-oriented career in Uronephrology. The program will focus on mentored summer research enrichment program, to begin June 2023; this will be followed by a yearlong virtual and in-person professional development activities by the mentors and OPSD team. Student Scholar application process opens December 1, 2022.
