A collaboration between Duke Health, Durham Public Schools, and Durham Technical Community College, the Durham Early College of Health Sciences prepares high school students for healthcare and clinical research careers through an innovative curriculum and hands-on learning experiences. This pathway is the first of its kind to provide entry directly from high school into the clinical research workforce. The school just completed its first year with a nearly 100 percent retention rate.

A career dedicated to improving health in partnership with communities has culminated in a transformational gift by Duke University School of Medicine Professor Emeritus J. Lloyd Michener, MD, to carry forward work that he and his wife, the late Gwendolyn C. Murphy, PhD, championed for years.

Faculty, staff, and residents from the Department of Medicine partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Durham to help build houses and address the need for affordable housing.

Over 100 students in Durham County enrolled last week in the incoming freshman class at the Durham Early College of Health Sciences. The school, an innovative partnership among Durham Public Schools, Durham Tech, and Duke Health, supported by a $29.5 million grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, educates high school students in skill that lead to jobs in patient care or clinical research at Duke Health upon graduation.

Duke School of Medicine led a statewide effort to break the world record for the most people trained in hands-only CPR in a single day. While falling short of the 30,000 person goal, almost 20 thousand participants learned CPR – a benchmark day for trainings in the United States.

Duke School of Medicine is leading a statewide effort to break the world record for the most people trained in hands-only CPR in a single day. The event is taking place in 30 counties in NC as part of the Randomized Cluster Evaluation of Cardiac Arrest Systems (RACE CARS) trial, led by Duke cardiologist and researcher Chris Granger, MD. Participants will learn how to provide CPR from volunteer trainers from Duke and volunteers across the state at select locations. Community volunteers are aiming to train 30,000 people in participating counties that day, and if they achieve it, that’ll be a new world record.
