Using Race in Clinical Outcomes Research: A View Through the Retrospectoscope

Join us for a discussion on the use of race in clinical outcomes research with Khadijah Breathett, MD, MS, FACC, FAHA, FHFSA, Assistant Professor of Medicine at The University of Arizona. Dr. Breathett is a heart failure cardiologist who works to prevent and treat the etiologies of heart failure disparities in patients of color and women. She led the development of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Disparities Research Guidelines and is passionate about reducing racial/ethnic and gender disparities. Dr. Breathett will be joined by Brad Hammill, DrPH, Associate Professor of Population Health Sciences, and Adrian Hernandez, MD, MHS, Vice Dean and Executive Director of the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Drs. Hammill and Hernandez will briefly present previously published papers that included race as a covariate and Dr. Breathett will discuss the approach and how it could be improved. She has developed a variety of studies and community interventions to reduce disparities in heart failure. Dr. Breathett is a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute R56 and K01-funded primary investigator for her work that addresses the allocation of advanced heart failure therapies in patients of color and women. She has published over 70 manuscripts, has received press acknowledgments in multiple publications, and has been recognized with prestigious awards. Dr. Breathett has chaired and co-authored American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology statement papers. She also serves on national committees within the American Heart Association, Heart Failure Society of America, and Association of Black Cardiologists. Dr. Breathett is an Associate Editor for Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes and led the team development of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Disparities Research Guidelines.
