Announcements:

As of January 1, 2017 the official Third Year Learning Management System is Canvas. If you are a second year students you can access the Before Third Year - Class of 2019 planning folder. If you are already a Third Year, you have access to the Third Year 2016/2017 course. 

Also, as of January 1, 2017 all documents will be signed via DocuSign, an electronic document signing program. You will be able to route your documents via email and when complete, are routed back to third year. This initiative should make it easier for students to obtain approvals from their Mentors, Study Program Directors and Advisory Deans.

Registration Form

Registration and Step 1 Plan Forms are due May 26, 2017 by Noon to the Third Year Office when you will obtain an approval number. Online registration ends on June 1, 2017 by noon.  Registration Form and information is available on Canvas and you will need to log on using your netID and password. Signatures required in the following order:

  1. Student
  2. Mentor
  3. Study Program Director
  4. Advisory Dean

Course Requirements:

  • Research Ethics: Including Required IRB/IACUC Approval
    Pass/Fail. Due ~30 days after start date. 
    Signatures required in the following order:
  1. Mentor
  2. Study Program Director
  •  First Term Research Grade: Pass/Fail (all requirements comprise the grade)
  • Mid-Term Progress Report:
    Due ~120 days after start date. 
    Signatures required in the following order:
  1. Mentor
  2. Study Program Director  
  • Mid-Year Evaluation:
    Your Mentor must complete the online Evaluation Form (online- link will be sent to each mentor). The grade is should be posted in ACES a month after the end of the term.
  • Quantitative Medicine and Decision Making II: The practice of medicine relies on a rigorously-developed evidence base to guide clinical decision making. It is the job of the physician to integrate this evidence base with their clinical experience to provide the best care possible for individual patients. To be effective in this endeavor the physician must know how to use and evaluate the evidence base and they must be conversant in the basic methods by which it is constructed. Therefore, we provide this course: Quantitative Medicine and Decision Making (QMDM)--that offers joint education in the practice of Evidence Based Medicine (EBM), epidemiology, and medical statistics. You will begin this course during your second year of medical school and complete the class during your third year.
  • Clinical Skills Continuity ClinicPass/Fail. (Not mentor related)
    You must begin clinic in the first term of your official Scholarly Experience and enroll in one more consecutive term. For example, if you start in Fall you must enroll in Fall and Spring; if you start in Spring you must enroll in Spring and Summer Terms Grade will be entered in last term. ALL Preceptor Approval Forms are due no later than September 1st. Approval is required prior to the start of clinic. Your Preceptor submits the Evaluation Form on the last day of your clinic in order to obtain credit for the course.

Second Term Research Grade: Pass/Fail (all requirements comprise the grade)

  • Oral Presentation (due at the end of your research)
    Mentor only signature required
  • AOA Abstract Submission (date TBD but usually last week in June)
  • AOA Day Participation (Friday, August 2, 2019 from 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM) - a mandatory event in which you must be present the entire day for attendance to count
  • Thesis: Honors/Pass/Fail 
    Your Third Year culminates in a thesis submission; a manuscript or grant alternative are also options and your mentor helps you with editing your work. Submissions will be uploaded to Box. Due on the last day of your research.
