"Celebrating Difference and Practicing Inclusion"

Welcome to the Diversity & Inclusion Program within the Office of Biomedical Graduate Education (OBGE) at Duke University – School of Medicine. OBGE is fundamentally committed to diversity and inclusion and works to ensure that all students can bring their full, authentic selves into the training environment.

Duke aspires to create a community built on collaboration, innovation, creativity, and belonging. Our collective success depends on the robust exchange of ideas—an exchange that is best when the rich diversity of our perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences flourishes. To achieve this exchange, it is essential that all members of the community feel secure and welcome, that the contributions of all individuals are respected, and that all voices are heard. All members of our community have a responsibility to uphold these values.

The Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Program seeks to maximize the recruitment and retention efforts for individuals from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by the National Science Foundation to be underrepresented in health-related sciences, also including individuals with disabilities. Working closely with the Graduate School at Duke and the Office of Diversity & Inclusion within the Duke School of Medicine, OBGE provides doctoral students in the biomedical sciences with access to university-wide resources and support systems.

We believe diversity within biomedical research enhances innovation by bringing a variety of thought that stimulates creativity and discovery. OBGE has four primary aims for D&I - attract, retain, educate, and excel - all four working together to support our commitment to ensuring that inclusion is integrated throughout everything we do. The D&I Program is dedicated to providing resources and education that highlight the value of individual difference, and the importance of cultivating inclusive spaces that maximize the potential for excellence.

OBGE is committed to:

  • Attracting and recruiting highly skilled and ambitious students that are historically underrepresented in the biomedical sciences
  • Establishing a productive environment for students, faculty, and staff that celebrates difference and collaboration
  • Providing resources and programming that meets students’ needs and supports their interests
  • Connecting students to a diverse network within academic, organizational, and industry settings in the biomedical sciences
