Each semester, the Davison Council Social Committee, lead by the VP Social, organizes numerous events and activities for DukeMed students. From trivia nights and neighborhood block parties to our flagship annual formal, the Davison Ball, the social committee works to plan events that appeal to the diverse DukeMed student body. Find out more about these events below!
Incoming MS1 Pre-orientation Social
At Duke, we believe in community building so much that our class socials begin the day before orientation week for the incoming class! Our students organize a variety of activities for the incoming class prior to orientation, which in the past have included field games and swimming at Jordan Lake, hikes in Eno River State Park, and a trip to Maple View Farms for ice cream. This opportunity lets new students connect with their peers and get a glimpse of fun places to visit in Durham before the school year even begins.
Mixers with other graduate school programs
Throughout the year, Davison Council organizes mixers with other graduate programs at Duke and UNC, such as socials at popular Durham hangout spots to watch football and basketball games or field games in Duke Gardens. Each year, we collaborate with the UNC School of Medicine to organize a Halloween social event for our schools to experience a Chapel Hill Franklin Street Halloween up close and in costume!
Fall formal: Duke Davison Ball
Our biggest schoolwide social event of the year is the fall formal, known as Duke Davison Ball. It is a great opportunity to get dressed up and celebrate another year of being a Duke medical student with classmates and visiting friends/significant others. Previous venues include Cameron Indoor Stadium, the Nasher museum of art, and the Museum of Life and Sciences. With great food and drinks, an awesome playlist, and fun photobooth props, this night is one to remember! Students who participate in Duke in Durham Day gain free entry into this ticketed event.
At the end of the fall semester, our first-year class Davison Council organizes a holiday party with faculty for the school. Ugly sweaters are highly encouraged!
The spring semester counterpart to Davison Ball, spring fling is a time to celebrate being more than halfway through the school year. It is an excellent opportunity to socialize with fellow medical students and friends as the weather warms up.
The student body at Duke is divided into four groups based on their assigned Advisory Dean. Each spring, these four groups compete against each other to see which Dean’s group reigns for the next school year! Students participate in a variety of field games such as soccer, relay races, water balloon tosses, IV bag shotput, and basketball (because we are at Duke after all!). The winning team often makes t-shirts to show their victory, and they get bragging rights for the next year.
Student Faculty Show
The Student-Faculty Show (‘SFS’) is an annual tradition, in which the school puts on an entirely student-written, -directed, and -produced full-length musical parody that captures the Duke Med experience. Together, students and faculty bring the show to life on stage providing the acting, singing, and dancing. Past shows have included Sickened (a parody of “Wicked”), Duke’s Avengers: Civil Ward (“Marvel’s Avengers: Civil War”), Lube (“Grease”), and The Gunner Games (“The Hunger Games”). The SOM’s very own band, Linton Yee and the Ultrasounds, is also featured. Each year, the whole school votes to select a local Durham charity to which to donate all proceeds from the fundraising efforts and ticket sales. This is a creative way to reflect on the Duke Med experience, while making connections with peers from other classes and raising money for a good cause.
