The Office of Diversity & Inclusion established the Michelle Winn Inclusive Excellence Award in 2016 to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to diversity and inclusion within the Duke School of Medicine community. Michelle Winn, MD, Associate Professor of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine, passed away in July 2014. Dr. Winn was respected and beloved by her colleagues and deeply committed to diversity and inclusion and to the careers of younger physicians and scientists who orbited around her. This award will be presented annually to a Duke Health community member who has exemplified a commitment to excellence, innovation, and leadership through helping create a more diverse and inclusive environment. We are now soliciting nominations for the 2018 Award. All School of Medicine faculty, staff, trainees, and health professions students are invited to nominate a faculty, staff, or student member in the School of Medicine (including MD, PA, PHD, and PT candidates or members). We welcome previously nominated candidates if not previously chosen to receive the award. One resident/fellow, one staff member, one student, and one faculty member will be chosen for the award.
To nominate someone for this award, please provide a letter with specific examples of the individual’s exemplary achievements and contributions towards inclusive excellence by means of service, leadership, research or education. You may submit one or more nominations but separate nomination forms must be submitted for each individual. The nomination letter should contain the following information:
Nominator and Nominee Names (residents/fellows, students, faculty, and staff eligible)
Nominator Relationship to Duke University School of Medicine
Nominator’s Mailing Address
Nominator’s Email Address
The letter should also specifically address the nominee and evidence of one or more of the following:
Improving awareness related to diversity, inclusion, bias, and/or healthcare disparities within SOM.
Track record mentoring underrepresented minorities/women.
Role modeling and/or community service.
Diversity and/or inclusion impact within Duke SOM.
Community engagement/focus on improving the care of a diverse patient population.
Initiation of innovative approaches to create diversity and/or foster inclusion.
