Because traditional academic jobs are available for only ~20% of graduate students in the sciences, there is an essential need to improve awareness of and opportunities in related career
settings such as public policy, medical writing, industry, and regulatory affairs. Expertise in
many of these fields may be found among Duke Medicine faculty and staff, as well as at the
DCRI and CTSI. DICOTS connects students with advisors across a range of professional
fields represented at Duke, including (but not limited to):

  • Medical writing / editing
  • Marketing / communications
  • Regulatory affairs / FDA
  • Project management
  • Clinical research / trials
  • Research and academic administration
  • Public policy/public health
  • Clinical laboratory research
  • Statistics (biostatistics, clinical research)

How the program works: Each student identifies a specific career of interest
and is paired with the appropriate advisor. The advisor provides the student with career
counseling about his/her area of expertise and may refer the advisee to educational programs,
internship opportunities, or other more specific avenues for training. The time commitment for
participation is determined by the advisor and student but is usually limited to a few hours per
month.

Applications accepted through September 15, 2017. Please include:

  • CV
  • A letter describing why you want to participate in this program and one specific career focus that you are interested in pursuing

Inquiries and applications should be sent to Amanda McMillan(amanda.mcmillan@ duke.edu).
